Trauma is always political: a comparative look at PTSD

From Mad in Mexico: Studies on trauma are a field of political dispute, where not only the ability to define what hurts and what does not is played, but the way we understand which determinants generate that pain, and if it is even relevant to conceptualize and transform these factors. The depoliticization of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) served particular objectives and allowed the nations that export their wars not to address political questions about the generation of this suffering: the focus was on diagnosing and attending. In Latin America, where violence was lived in the same territory, these questions were unavoidable and that gave way to a more complex look at suffering where the important thing was not the diagnosis but the social recomposition after the ruptures generated by the war, and therefore, the question of the conditions that resulted in the materialization of suffering.
