Murphy’s Mental Health Bill a Threat to Civil Liberties

In an Op-ed for the Times Union, Madeleine Ringwald explains how the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act “would severely disable protection and advocacy organizations from protecting the civil, legal and human rights of people in mental health services.”  “Whether you examine it through a scientific, civil rights or bottom-line lens, Murphy’s bill should appall you,” she writes. “Any legislation that bolsters institutionalization at the cost of community-based services seeks not to help those with mental health needs, but help society find ways to hide, suppress and silence them.”

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. – Martin Niemöller

It is not ironic that the Nazis started with those labeled mentally ill the same way Murphy seeks to do. All wingnuts like Hitler and Murphy start out sounding reasonable

    • At any rate serious “advocates” should not be dependent on govt. money

Your right. The Republican party is hiring people with mental disturbances ar a record pace. Insane people are being urged to run for congress and the presidency. Why apply for poverty when you can have a suggar daddy buy your way through life?

  2. Housing First approaches are based on the concept that a homeless individual or household’s first and primary need is to obtain stable housing, and that other issues that may affect the household can and should be addressed once housing is obtained. In contrast, many other programs operate from a model of “housing readiness” — that is, that an individual or household must address other issues that may have led to the episode of homelessness prior to entering housing.

Look up the success rate of housing first.

Many so called mentally ill people just can’t do the normal life of slavery, maintain a JOB to pay rent or a mortgage.

Look at the new tools in Home Depo lately, you could build a house in less than a week. Pop Pop Pop goes the compressed air nail guns, zip zip zip goes the light weight lithium battery screw guns and new saws and stuff.

There really is no reason for housing to cost as much as it does besides all bullcrap that makes it that way. It is NOT labor and material. Its permits and fees and ‘zoning’ and the dozens and dozens of people who produce nothing but paperwork slowing things down getting a cut.

The answer to ALL this bull sh^t is to fire three quarters of the paper pushers involved in our attempt to deal with the so called mental illness crisis and hire construction workers.

It will never happen, just more of the same, billions and billions of dollars to make tons and tons of paperwork and “services” and “that’s the way we always done it” bullshit that never works.

The government cant solve this problem.

“You can’t solve a problem with the same minds that created it.”

The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.

    • HEALTHCARE. Liberty Partners Group is lobbying for Sandy Hook Promise, an advocacy group fighting for gun control. The group, which has taken up the mental health issue as a way of protecting children and families from guns, is focused on legislation in the House and Senate meant to reform mental health policy. Specifically, Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.), a trained psychologist, has introduced the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. The measure has attracted 123 co-sponsors. In the upper chamber, Sens. Bill
Cassidy (R-La.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) have taken up the mantle, introducing the Mental Health Reform Act earlier this year. Two of the staff members of Sandy Hook Promise had children killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.
